WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Tren de Aragua Border Security Threat Assessment Act. Congressman Brad Knott (NC-13), a member of the Committee on Homeland Security, introduced the bill directing the Department of Homeland Security to conduct a study and implement a strategy to combat the Foreign Terrorist Organization known as Tren de Aragua.
Rep. Knott: “As a prosecutor, I saw the immeasurable impact transnational crime organizations have had on every corner of our country that were enabled by dangerously weak borders and immigration policy. This problem is here and we see it. International, violent criminals attacking law enforcement officers, brazenly taking over neighborhoods, and moving drugs, guns, and human captives throughout our country. Few organizations have been more effective at exploiting these dangerous policies to secure a permanent presence in the United States than the group known as Tren de Aragua, or TdA. We must gear up, dig in, and remove this threat to the homeland. Today is an important step towards achieving that goal.”
Homeland Security Committee Chair Andrew Garbarino: “Tren de Aragua has wreaked havoc on our communities and has facilitated human, drug, and weapons trafficking on U.S. soil. The Tren de Aragua Border Security Threat Assessment Act will be crucial in helping DHS restore law and order after the Biden-Harris administration’s open-border policies allowed public safety and national security threats into our country. I applaud the House’s passage of Congressman Knott’s legislation today, which will commit the proper resources to assessing the scope of the threat, and I urge the Senate to do so as well.”
